June 2004 brought the death of Shane Chimpanzee
at APF. Shane was identified as #CA0118 and he death is noted, "shane
died on June 2 of acute heart failure. A gross necropsy revealed
an enlarged heart with the right side being severly dilated and
the left side severely hypertrophic. Histology is pending".
Shane's death brought the APF census to 262 chimpanzees.
Documents about APF chimpanzees tell us:
"3. Most of the chimpanzees have either been
infected with one or more chronic viruses, and even if they were
negative controls the chimpanzees have been subjected in the past
to many invasive procedures such as punch biopsies of the liver
and anesthetic events. These procedures are thought to contribute
to long-term prolems in some animals with liver and renal failure,
and various blood abnormalities."
Comments like these tell us the extraordinarly
sloppy job these facilites do and the government regulating agencies
who get rich 'regulating' them. As has been determined long ago,
animal experiments are for the money, not for human health.
