Statement from Rio de Janiero Councilman,
Claudio Cavalcanti:
To all anti-vivisection and animal rights activists in
Brazil and the world:
I hereby, make an appeal to all animal rights and
anti-vivisection activists from Brazil and worldwide
to please express their support in favor of the law to
which I am the author, which prohibits vivisection and
scientific experiments on animals in the city of Rio
de Janeiro.
This law was approved by the City Council in March of
this year, but was vetoed by the Mayor. It will return
to the City Council of Rio de Janeiro, following
official procedures, when the Mayor´s veto will be
evaluated and either endorsed or rejected by the
majority voting. We will need 26 votes to overturn the
Mayor´s veto.
In case the Mayor´s veto is overturned, this law will
represent the liberation of animals from laboratories
in the city of Rio de Janeiro, and this will set a
national and international precedent to end the
systematic and continuous torture of millions of
animals worldwide.
This is urgent. The voting may happen anytime this
week, possibly on Thursday, June 1st. (ed: Voting is
now scheduled for June 20th)
Claudio Cavalcanti,
City Counselor
